The Trip that Changed my Mind                                                                                                                                                             Beep! Beep! Beep! My eyes popped open. I grinned wickedly. It was revenge time, Well, technically it was 6 a.m.             I should have known she would betray me. I should have realized that Payton Patterson was a stuck up, snobby little brat. I was actually really excited about going on this church retreat, but she ruined it,absolutely spoiled it. Yesterday, we did a relay race, and I’m what you might call “unathletic” and “clumsy”, so of course I fell a few times on my own, but Payton did not have to double the odds of me falling by shoving her long leg right in front of me. I was even more humiliated than usual, and now Payton was going to feel my embarrassment.                                                   I climbed out of my cot into the dark room and the temperature was enough to drive me back into the covers. I grabbed a blanket and tiptoed over to Payton’s bunk with my secret weapon and Payton’s worst fear: a tarantula. I know that Payton’s deadly afraid of spiders because she told me back when we were friends, back when we promised we would never hurt each other. Well, if she broke that promise, then why shouldn’t I? Rustle, rustle. “Who is that?” Mrs. Janice moaned sleepily. I ducked down. “I am so dead!” I thought. Silence. Whew! That was close! I stood up, my heart pounding out of my chest, but relieved. I continued on my short journey through the freezing bunk beds.

Just as I was about to place the creepy arachne on Payton’s stupidly perfect pillow, I saw a colorful card in her hand. It was an apology card to ……… me. “Okay, now I know she didn’t mean to,” I thought guiltily, “this is wrong.” I placed the hideous spider back under my pillow and got back in bed.

Beep! Beep! Beep! Ugh! Plotting revenge takes a lot of energy. “Hey, Eva?” Payton asked cautiously. “I am really sorry about yesterday,” she lamented, “ I know it’s kinda lame, but I made you a card.” “ I love it! Thank you so much!” I squealed. Now, I don’t squeal much, but it was genuine. Payton sighed in relief. “Friends?” “Friends.” We strutted into the sunlight, into our next adventure.
